Behind the Mask
by: Laura E. Holman
Laura E. Holman, author of, “Behind the Mask,” has written a very gripping book detailing the sexual abuses that she endured, as well as various other forms of abuse. She begins by sharing her childhood and the extreme abuse, she and her mother, experienced at the hand of her step-father. Laura shares, from within the depths of her soul, about the several rapes she endured, from family members to strangers, ending tragically with a pastor in the church she attended.
She speaks candidly about her feelings, thoughts, emotions, and the turmoil she felt within. She shares how she was affected by the violence she witnessed and endured throughout her life. At one point in her life, she turned to substance abuse and prostitution, thinking it was her only ‘escape.’
However, perhaps most important in Laura’s story, is the way in which she had such divine intervention and protection. On numerous occasions, she witnessed firsthand, the miraculous hand of God upon her life. After many years of suffering and torment, Laura comes to know Jesus in a way that is similar to a loving relationship that so many long for, including myself. She shares about how God entered her life, cradled her in his love and grace, and embraced her in his compassion and protection, much like a loving and doting father does for his child.
Laura speaks directly to the spirit of the victim of abuse. She speaks of the love that God holds for them. She speaks to them that it is not their fault. She speaks of the truth of freedom that is found in God. She shares examples of miracle after miracle, thus providing hope for the victim. God is truly able to take our mask off and set us free, to be who he created us to be.
Her book is one that I will keep and continue to read regularly. Without even knowing this author on a personal level, I was deeply touched with her story, as well as her words of encouragement. I recommend this book to all Christian victims of domestic violence and spiritual abuse. I came away, after reading this book, with a renewed hope and refreshing within myself.

Although I am but one person, the voice which I use, to speak out against domestic violence, is the voice of many.
Behind the Mask, by Laura E. Holman is an inspirational autobiography of hope and healing. She takes you through an intense consuming childhood peppered with abuse into an agonizing adolescence where the abuse escalates. Her body repeatedly violated while her mind and voice kept silent by one word, FEAR. Exploring her world through drug use, suicide attempts and prostitution causes your heart to weep at every twist and turn the story takes. The innocence of a trusting child is still apparent as she grows into adulthood. These circumstances where not of her making, but an act of survival. In an unfortunate turn of events finds her incarcerated.
Laura attains the strength to dig deep within her soul and change her life through Christianity. Her faith is inviolable; the one thing she knows without question is the love of God. Again, unfortunate events put her in a precarious post ion when a ‘man of God’ made advances toward her. She did not allow this to hamper her FAITH, but allowed her to stop the cycle of abuse she had become accustomed too. Holman knew there was something calling her toward ministry. She absorbed the word of God as her calling became stronger. Today she is a living testament to the Word of God. Through all the adversity in life regardless of how deep into the pit of disparity you may find yourself think of Laura E. Holman. Her words of encouragement, enlightenment and spirituality will lead you in the right direction with her ministry.

Laura Holman, in her book "Behind the Mask," takes you through the journey of her life. Her life, initially, begins with her Grandmother, surrounded in love and guidance to be then taken back to live with her mother where things seem to go downhill very quickly. In fact, Laura is raped repeatedly by different men throughout her life, eventually resulting in her getting pregnant and bearing a son. Her self esteem shattered to nothingness, draws her into a world of drinking, drugs, and prostitution, leaving her son to be raised by his grandmother for 11 years.
Laura depicts how she was able to overcome her traumatic past and some disastrous choices by finding herself in God. Laura also explains that it does not matter how bad things become in your life or how many bad choices you may make; it is never too late to change or better yourself. I truly applaud Laura's courage in sharing her story to help others know that they are not alone. That there are always choices a person can make in their life to better themselves.

Review for BEHIND THE MASK by Laura Holman
The author relates her very difficult years of growing up and finding abuse and betrayal at every turn. She portrays an individual who finds strength to carry on despite the hardships that come her way as she becomes a young adult and mother. I feel that the problems she faced would have broken most people. Yet, despite her many years of being tested she consistently turns toward God to help her and show her the Way.
This was a great book of faith and what God can do in your life if you will let him.
Marie Carroll – Author FEELING THE HURT, HEALING THE HEART
Behind the Mask, by Laura E. Holman takes you on a page turning journey of one woman's strength as she is faced with one hurt and disappointment after another. Laura has taken many destructive routes in life, attempting to fill a void that she later finds out only God can fill. I applaud Holman's strength as she boldly exposes predators that hide behind deceitful smiles of trust. Laura reminds us we are not alone and we don’t have to walk with our heads hung in shame and spiritual disfigurement, but “God can turn your battle scars into beauty marks”.
I recommend Behind the Mask to everyone that has been faced with abuse and anyone that has ever been deceived in any way. This book will give you hope and help you to stand tall, look your abuser in the face and declare, No More! ~ Vyeasa M.
05-23-05 Review Commentary: I found this book to be very inspirational. To read about the trials and tribulations of one woman's life and the many struggles she's had to endure. I found this to book to be a personal testimony of one person and the many demonic forces she's had to fight with, but the most heart touching of all was when her stumbling blocks became stepping stones. I personally feel that this book will serve on a greater level if introduced to a lot of women groups on women issues, women conferences, women in prison as well as their prison ministry and a lot of women shelters for battered women. This book can be a great learning tool for women on all levels. It touches a lot of areas that women deal with. This book was very refreshing seeing that one person looked past their faults and saw how this book could meet the needs of many.
